Scooter’s Coffee Joins US Chains in Dropping Non-Dairy Surcharge

Nebraska-based Scooter’s Coffee has become the latest US coffee chain to eliminate the surcharge for non-dairy alternatives. This decision aligns with a growing trend among major US chains to cater to customers who prefer plant-based milk options.

The move comes after a year-long collaboration with Mercy For Animals, a campaign group advocating for the removal of non-dairy surcharges. Jennifer Behr, Corporate Relations Manager at Mercy For Animals, emphasized the equity issues associated with the extra charges, noting their disproportionate impact on communities of color.

With this decision, four of the five largest branded coffee chains in the US, including Starbucks, Dutch Bros, and Panera Bread, now offer non-dairy options free of charge. Dunkin’ remains the exception among the top five chains.

According to the Project Café USA 2025 report by World Coffee Portal, a staggering 91% of US industry leaders believe offering dairy alternatives is crucial for coffee shops. Almond milk tops the list of popular alternatives, followed by oat and coconut milk.
