#TheFutureIsDairy - This was the slogan of the European Dairy Association's (EDA) Annual Convention held in Brussels last week. Thanks Alexander Anton for the opportunity to attend such a wonderful event and to have the networking and discussions with global dairy opinion makers. The wrap up of my thoughts, filtered of what I’ve heard, please find below:

???? The number of challenges for the industry has increased in recent years. Crises (Covid, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, energy, inflation, etc.) have increased the volatility and unpredictability of price trends. This has changed the attitude to "sustainable development". Now, in addition to environmental sustainability, businesses are increasingly turning to economic sustainability, without which it is impossible to invest in environmental and social development.

???????? EU parliamentarians, dairy associations and businesses are convinced that the actions of the European Commission of the last term were largely wrong. Political populism has led to negative consequences for the agricultural sector in general and the dairy sector in particular. EDA President Giuseppe Ambrosi: "We have not seen the EU Commission acting on the basis of the basic requirements for the legislative process: scientific approach, impact assessment and a certain level of stakeholder involvement."

Next year, elections to the European Commission are scheduled, all operators are looking forward to changes and reforms, and the agricultural sector should have a clear strategy and take a leading place among other areas of the EC's activities.

???? Ambrosi: "We will have to make sure that dairy industry voice will be heard in the political space in Brussels from the very beginning of the next legislative term in July 2024. We simply cannot afford another five years of just defending ourselves!".

‼ The message from European associations and businesses is also very important: there is no need for unnecessary regulations, and officials should not tell businesses how to do business. Regulatory goals should be clear, but businesses should determine how they will achieve taken goals while minimising economic risks.

???????? Ukraine should take advantage of the upcoming changes in European policy and promote its aligned with EU business partners vision of a common agricultural market with the EU. Ukrainian business is already demonstrating the principles of economic sustainability by "surviving" the war and ensuring foodsecurity both domestically and globally. Despite the current difficult conditions, the Ukrainian dairy business sees itself future as part of the European dairy family ???? .
