In a recent development, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has given the green light to cancel the reservation of over 3.5 hectares of land in Katraj, initially designated as a municipal playground, and earmarked it for dairy production. The land is set to be handed over to Katraj Dairy, a significant player in the dairy sector and backed by the Ajit Pawar faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

The decision, approved by the PMC's city improvement committee on December 20, 2023, is part of a proposal that will undergo a period of suggestions and objections before receiving final approval. The land, estimated to have a market price of ₹100 crore, will be utilized for dairy production, with the Pune District Cooperative Milk Producer Sangh overseeing its management.
The resolution passed by the PMC city improvement committee stated, “As per Pune city’s development plan (DP), the playground reservation on the plot measuring 3.591 hectares at survey no 132 (part) and 133 (part) to be cancelled, and the land to be reserved for dairy production purposes with the Pune District Cooperative Milk Producer Sangh being appointed as authority, and the proposal has been approved and is being put forward for suggestions and objections.”
Municipal commissioner Vikram Kumar has given his approval for the proposal, and it is expected to move forward with the backing of Ajit Pawar. After compiling suggestions and objections, the proposal will be presented before the general body for approval, following which it will be forwarded to the state government’s urban development department (UDD) for the final go-ahead to transfer the land to Katraj Dairy.
Katraj Dairy, a prominent and longstanding dairy in the district, is managed by the Pune District Cooperative Milk Producer Sangh, with the majority of its leadership belonging to the Ajit Pawar faction of the NCP. The initiative to change the reservation of the land from a playground to dairy usage began in response to a request from Ajit Pawar, then deputy chief minister, in February 2021. The subsequent process, guided by the UDD and PMC commissioner Vikram Kumar, has now reached the stage of land allocation for dairy production, contributing to the growth of Katraj Dairy under the leadership of the Ajit Pawar faction.
