Packaged milk prices in Pakistan are set to increase following the approval of an 18% general sales tax (GST) by the PML-N-led alliance government in the Budget 2024-25. The national legislature passed the budget on Friday, imposing the GST on packaged milk, herbal and homeopathic medicines, and food items.
With the new GST, branded flour, packaged rice, and lentils will also become more expensive. Despite opposition from the Senate Standing Committee on Finance, the government proceeded with the decision, which will also affect charitable and welfare hospitals through increased sales tax.
This move is expected to significantly raise the cost of living for many Pakistanis, particularly low-income families who rely on these essential items.
The new taxes were approved despite appeals from dairy industry representatives and other stakeholders, who urged the government to reconsider the general sales tax.
