Oterra Launches New Natural Colouring Centre in India

Oterra, a leading supplier of natural colors for the food and beverage industry, has inaugurated a new color blending and application center in Kerala, India, aiming to cater to the burgeoning markets across India, the Asia Pacific, and the Middle East.
The new facility, located in Kochi, Ernakulam district, on the site of Oterra’s subsidiary Akay Natural Ingredients, is equipped with state-of-the-art color blending and application labs, intended to assist customers transitioning to natural colors. According to Oterra CEO Martin Sonntag, the APAC region, including India, is increasingly leaning towards products with natural ingredients, thereby elevating the region’s importance for the company.
Previously, Oterra had to export raw materials to its factories in Europe for processing, later importing the finished blends back to India. However, with the new facility, the company can now supply natural color shades directly, covering hues like yellow, orange, red, and pink, derived from turmeric, paprika, annatto, and red beet.
The site employs around 120 workers involved in production and lab operations, with raw materials undergoing spray drying and mixing processes. Manu Raj V., Director and Head of Operations at Akay Natural Ingredients, emphasized that the local facility not only streamlines the supply chain but also ensures a consistent supply of high-quality natural colors and reduces response times to customer demands.
The Natural Food Colours Association, Natcol, indicates significant potential for natural colors in India’s food and drink industry. Despite the popularity of vibrant, natural fresh ingredients in Indian home cooking, the local packaged goods industry primarily relies on artificial colors. However, changing consumer trends and export demands may facilitate a shift towards natural alternatives.
Market research by Innova Market Insights shows a rising consumer preference in India for food and beverages free from artificial additives and preservatives, driving demand for products with minimally processed, real ingredients.
