Opposition Protests PMC's Controversial Move to Change Land Reservation in Katraj for Dairy Business

The Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) decision to alter the reservation of a seven-acre land in Katraj from a playground to a dairy business, as instructed by the state government, has sparked strong opposition from political parties.
Despite the state government's decade-old allocation of the land to Katraj Dairy for expansion, the PMC had originally reserved it for use as a playground. Opposition leaders argue that this decision contradicts a Supreme Court judgment favoring the retention of the land's reservation as a playground, citing the necessity of such spaces for local residents.
Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) staged a protest against Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar and the PMC, emphasizing the densely populated nature of the Katraj area and the absence of available land for a playground other than the one reserved by the PMC. City Congress chief Arvind Shinde called for relocating the dairy firm away from the residential locality.
NCP MP Supriya Sule joined the dissent, expressing her disagreement with the change in land reservation in Katraj, emphasizing the need for a playground for local residents.
In 1969, the state government allocated 20 acres of land to the Cooperative Milk Producers Federation for Katraj Dairy, with ownership transferred to the dairy in 2013. However, the PMC, during the city's development plan, reserved seven acres of the land, in possession of Katraj Dairy, for a playground, leaving only four acres for the dairy.
The Cooperative Milk Producers Federation, representing milk-producing farmers from 11 talukas, has filed a case seeking possession of the entire 20-acre land allocated by the state government in 1969. PMC officials have confirmed initiating the process to change the land reservation from a playground to a dairy, with a report to be submitted to the state government soon.
