The state of Nagaland has witnessed a notable decrease in its domestic production of animal husbandry products, impacting self-sufficiency efforts.
Nagaland: Domestic Production of Meat, Eggs, Dairy Declines
In the fiscal year 2023-24, Nagaland experienced a decline in the domestic production of meat, eggs, and dairy, with output falling to Rs. 1020.67 crores, marking a 4.38% decrease from the previous year.

Similarly, imports reduced slightly to Rs. 271.99 crores, a 1.7% decrease from Rs. 276.69 crores in the previous year.

This decreasing trend emphasizes the state's challenge in achieving self-sufficiency in animal husbandry products, as highlighted in the Nagaland Economic Survey 2024-25 presented during the 6th session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly. The survey further revealed that the state only produces 42.57% of its total requirement, leaving a 57.43% shortfall. To mitigate this gap, Nagaland relies on imports.

The Department of Veterinary & Animal Husbandry's Annual Sample Survey of 2023-24 found that per capita availability in the state was 75 grams of milk, 43 grams of meat per person per day, and 30 eggs per person annually.
