The Malaysia-United Arab Emirates Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (MY-UAE CEPA) is poised to bring significant advantages to Malaysia’s palm oil industry. With provisions aimed at eliminating or reducing tariffs, the agreement is expected to improve market access for Malaysian palm oil and related products in the UAE and beyond.
MY-UAE CEPA to Boost Malaysian Palm Oil Exports with Enhanced Market Access

Belvinder Sron, CEO of the Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC), emphasized the importance of the UAE in Malaysia’s palm oil export strategy. “MPOC recognises the UAE as a critical market within the Middle East,” she stated.

“As a leading trade hub, the UAE serves as a gateway to major regions, including the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe. With the implementation of the MY-UAE CEPA, Malaysian exporters will benefit from zero-tariff access, enhancing the competitiveness of palm oil products across these regions,” she added.

Strengthening Market Presence

MPOC is committed to bolstering Malaysia’s palm oil presence in the UAE by capitalizing on existing market strengths and tapping into emerging opportunities. Focus areas include packaged products, specialty fats, and shortening. To support this initiative, MPOC has planned targeted promotional activities, including trade networking events and campaigns aimed at increasing industry and consumer awareness.

The organisation has encouraged Malaysian palm oil stakeholders to participate in these initiatives to fully capitalize on the benefits offered by the MY-UAE CEPA.

Export Growth Potential

In 2024, the UAE imported 170,534 metric tonnes of Malaysian palm oil. With the CEPA agreement now in force, coupled with MPOC’s strategic promotional efforts, Malaysia’s palm oil exports to the UAE are expected to experience substantial growth in the coming years.

Call for Collaboration

MPOC has called for unity among Malaysian palm oil stakeholders to leverage the opportunities presented by the CEPA. “Together, we can strengthen Malaysia’s foothold in this important market and achieve sustainable growth for the industry,” Sron stated.

The MY-UAE CEPA underscores Malaysia’s commitment to expanding its global palm oil market while ensuring long-term growth and competitiveness in key regions.
