Mexican Milk Brands Undergo Quality Evaluation by Profeco
The Procuraduría Federal del Consumidor (Profeco) has completed a comprehensive quality assessment of several milk brands available in the Mexican market. The objective was to verify adherence to labeling and safety regulations. This evaluation focused on critical factors such as protein content, fat percentage, energy content, and sanitary quality.
The results were released to guide consumers and distinguish genuine dairy products from those engaging in misleading advertising. Among the brands receiving top marks for full compliance with Mexican legislation are Lala Light, Leche León, Pasteurizada Villalpando, and Alpura Clásica. These brands were confirmed by laboratory tests to meet the declared volume and nutritional expectations on their labels, validating their pasteurization and quality control processes.
Conversely, the report highlighted products with severe formulation or labeling issues. Notably, the brand 'Los Volcanes' was found to contain vegetable fat instead of the exclusive milk fat, resulting in its classification as misleading. Additionally, 'Lala 100' products, in both fresh and lactose-free versions, failed to meet the minimum non-fat solids content mandated by the official Mexican standard.
For dairy producers, farmers, and industry analysts in Mexico, such official evaluations are seen as vital tools in combating unfair competition. Products using alternative ingredients but marketed falsely as fluid milk lower the prices paid to the primary sector and confuse consumers at the point of sale. Maintaining stable profitability for each farm requires clear differentiation between pure milk and lower-cost dairy formulas and imitations.
The sustainability of the dairy basin and the stability of processing plants depend on consumer trust in daily food products. Technical advisors and veterinary experts agree that the high quality of raw materials achieved from milking should be reflected in an honest final product. Profeco's report acts as a catalyst for the industry to uphold process excellence, rewarding national farmers' efforts and ensuring the country's food security.
