Lactalis Expands Asia Growth with Australian Dairy Hub

Lactalis has established a significant presence in the Australian dairy sector over the past decade, following its acquisition of Parmalat and other local brands such as Pauls, Oak, Vaalia, and Jalna. The company has managed to build a dominant manufacturing and retail footprint despite structural challenges in the Australian dairy supply chain, such as a decreasing national milk pool and ongoing margin pressures.

According to Lactalis CEO Emmanuel Besnier, Australia offers solid commercial fundamentals and high-quality raw milk resources, which are crucial for the company's strategic expansion into Southeast Asia. The plan involves using Australia as a manufacturing hub to serve rapidly growing markets in regions like Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, and the Philippines. This strategy focuses on exporting premium value-added dairy products, fresh milk, and specialized yogurt lines produced in Australia.

Besnier's remarks highlight a broader trend in the dairy industry, where major multinational processors are investing in high-margin, value-added consumer categories and integrating regional supply chains. He emphasized the importance of maintaining strong partnerships with Australian dairy farming families and investing in processing infrastructure to ensure operational resilience and protect market share against global competitors.
