The first project outside the United States to adapt a livestock enterprise to climate change is being implemented by KazBeef. The corresponding memorandum within the framework of the World Climate Conference (COP-28) taking place in Dubai was signed by three parties: the American company EcoBalance Global, a world leader in managing carbon storage projects; the Kusto Group company, whose structure includes KazBeef; and the Almaty company rTek, which is part of the Rakurs Consulting Group and is engaged in the implementation of advanced technological solutions.

The goal of the 10-year Climate Smart Beef pilot project is to build on American experience to create a model for beef production that has a low or zero carbon footprint. Indeed, today, according to experts, one third of all greenhouse gas emissions are generated by food production systems.

When it comes to low-carbon livestock technology, it is based on a pasture rotation program. This makes it possible to reduce the load on ecosystems, avoid soil degradation, and, as a result, increase carbon sequestration in the soil. Digital land monitoring systems help the farm in proper management of farmland. They also keep accurate records of carbon emissions. Blockchain technology is designed to control the process.

In the future, the introduction of such a system will allow KazBeef to connect to the carbon trading platform.

EcoBalance Global's own ranch in North Dakota has now generated more than 18,000 registered carbon credits while tracking 900 head of cattle. EcoBalance's experience could form the basis of a global standard for sustainable and climate-friendly beef sourcing.

KazBeef company was founded in 2011. This is a vertically integrated holding, including acreage for feed production, a breeding reproducer, a feedlot for 12 thousand heads and a meat processing plant. The volume of beef production is more than 6 thousand tons per year.

“KazBeef is a pioneer in environmentally conscious agriculture and livestock farming. With this new partnership, we will become leaders in carbon capture in agriculture. I hope our efforts can become a model for many others. COP28 offers a unique opportunity to discuss the ongoing transition in global food production and agriculture, and I am proud that KazBeef will play an important role in creating a more sustainable future for us all,” commented Erkin Tatishev, Chairman of the Board of Kusto Group, commenting on the signing of the memorandum.
