The prospects of trade relations between Kazakhstan and Iran were discussed at the North-South forum held recently in Aktau. One of the important points of the interstate meeting was the signing of a roadmap for the synchronous development of the potential of the eastern route for 2024-2025. If the document is implemented, by 2027 the throughput capacity of this corridor may reach 15 million tons of products per year, and by 2030 it will approach 20 million tons.

"Kazakhstan intends to continue its active participation in the development of the eastern branch of the North-South railway, which has the highest potential for cargo traffic growth until 2030 and appears to be the safest for the shortest transit to the Indian Ocean. Therefore, it is necessary to start the practical implementation of the roadmap signed today for the synchronous development of the potential of the eastern route of the North-South ITC, passing through the territories of Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkmenistan and Iran," Marat Karabayev, Head of the Ministry of Transport, said during the forum.

This news was positively received by Kazakhstani manufacturers. For example, oil processors are already actively working with the Iranian market, however, through sea routes. However, the scale of cooperation could be even greater. Today, the development in this direction is hampered by the lack of oil tank farms with a volume of at least 5 thousand tons with the possibility of transferring products to ships in the ports of the Caspian Sea. It is also necessary to work out the issue of transshipment of granulated meal. Without solving these issues, it is impossible to reduce logistics costs and reduce the time for cargo transportation. And these are issues of competitiveness in the market.

Iran imports about 1.5 million tons of vegetable oils annually. Half of the production is sunflower oil, the rest is palm and soybean oil.

"Iran also buys high-protein feed. Soy meal is mainly imported, and sunflower oil is actively being purchased today. During the nine months of the current season, Kazakh oil processors sent over 56 thousand tons of meal and sunflower oil to Iran, which is 133% higher than the indicators of the 2022/2023 season. These were mainly supplies of sunflower meal," explained Yadykar Ibragimov, Chairman of the Board of the National Association of Oilseed Processors.
