Ireland’s Agriculture Minister Stresses Importance of Live Exports Amid Calls for Enhanced Animal Welfare

Irish Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue emphasized the role of live exports in Ireland's farming sector while highlighting the industry's goal of retaining more dairy calves within the country to support the beef industry. Speaking after a recent RTÉ documentary exposed alleged violations of EU animal transport regulations, McConalogue acknowledged that the live animal trade remains "important" for Irish farmers, not only as a revenue option but also as a means of maintaining market stability and competition.

The Minister pointed out that while live exports are a relatively small component of the overall agricultural market, they are essential for offering price options and supporting the farming economy. However, he also stressed that the sector aspires to see more dairy calves raised and finished domestically, allowing Irish farmers to benefit fr om the beef system.

Addressing animal welfare concerns raised by the documentary, McConalogue stated, “We are committed to ensuring the welfare of animals is maintained at the highest standards.” He added that his department is seeking all footage from RTÉ and plans to investigate any breaches of law thoroughly.

Although some incidents depicted in the documentary occurred outside Ireland, McConalogue emphasized the importance of stringent enforcement across all EU countries, underscoring that Ireland is responsible for upholding EU regulations within its borders. "Anywhere we see a breach...we will follow up with the utmost seriousness, and wh ere appropriate, pursue criminal prosecution," he said.

The Minister reiterated his commitment to animal welfare and insisted that the vast majority of animals in Ireland are treated with respect and in accordance with the law. “I take animal welfare very seriously, and there are comprehensive laws in place to ensure proper oversight and regulation,” he concluded.
