Grupo Lala Adopts Eco-Friendly Packaging Amid Rising Dairy Prices

Grupo Lala, a leading dairy company in Mexico, is adapting its strategy in response to rising dairy prices and increased competition from private labels. In 2026, the company is focusing on eco-friendly packaging and its ultrafiltered Lala 100 product line to address these challenges.

The Mexican dairy market is experiencing significant price increases, with dairy prices rising by 8.3%, which is double the general inflation rate. This has resulted in a 3% decline in mass consumption volumes. According to NielsenIQ Mexico, the annual per capita consumption in the country ranges between 124 and 130 liters, well below the 180 liters recommended by the FAO.

Private labels have gained a significant foothold in the market, holding between 10% and 13% market share in the modern channel. This growth is driven by the popularity of hard discounters. Bain & Company projects that by 2030, this segment could double its value, potentially reaching a 20% market share.

To combat the trend of substitution and maintain its market position, Grupo Lala is investing in high-value, nutritionally dense categories such as lactose-free and fortified products. A key part of this strategy is the Lala 100 line, produced through exclusive ultrafiltration processes that remove lactose and concentrate proteins by 70%.

Grupo Lala's commercial redesign also includes a strict generational segmentation strategy. While Generation X and Baby Boomers prefer traditional family formats, Millennials and Generation Z are targeted with individual portions and biodegradable, aseptic packaging. These advanced packaging technologies not only meet environmental responsibility criteria but also enhance logistical efficiency and shelf life.

The company is shifting its brand positioning from transactional advertising to a public conversation approach, focusing on debunking nutritional myths. The current corporate challenge is to restore the everyday appeal of milk through transparent, evidence-based informational campaigns. Achieving a balance between technical processing optimization and communication tailored to the sensitivities of young urban consumers is seen as crucial for maintaining leadership in the national agribusiness sector.
