The main dairy trend in Mexico is the reduction in drinking milk consumption

According to the expert, the share of drinking milk in the consumption structure has fallen below 50%.
In this regard, between 2011 and 2022 in Mexico, the production of pasteurized milk decreased by 2.8%, UHT milk by 1.3% and yoghurt by 2.5%. At the same time, cheese production increased by 6.5%, butter - by 7.1%.
The minimum recommended per capita intake in Mexico remains at 130 kg per capita per year, lower than the FAO recommended limit of 150 kg.
Mexico remains an import-dependent country, providing no more than 70% of domestic demand. The main supplier of dairy products to Mexico is the United States, accounting for 77% of all imports.
Mexico's main import destinations are milk powders, caseins and caseinates, whey protein concentrates and other products used in the production of breast milk substitutes (BMS). Considering that Mexico is a major producer of BMS in the world (Nestlé has BMS production facilities in the country), 65% of all dairy exports are BMS, with 21% of this volume coming from the United States.
