Galicia and Asturias collaborate on Climalact, a project aimed at creating a climate neutrality label for dairy farms

The project, which will run over the next three years with a budget of 600,000 euros, involves several collaborative partners, including the Fundación Empresa Universidade Galega (Feuga), Campoastur, Capsa Food, the Asociación Galega de Cooperativas Agroalimentarias (Agaca), Association Intereo, and the University of Santiago de Compostela's Silvopastorales Systems Group.
The initiative will assess the entire value chain, selecting best practices and evaluating their environmental, economic, and socio-economic impacts. It sets out to create protocols for measuring climate neutrality and a user-friendly application.
Moreover, Climalact will investigate the environmental, economic, and social sustainability indicators, striving to uncover critical factors for reducing the carbon footprint of farms. It will examine different farm models: intensive, semi-intensive, extensive, and semi-extensive, designing criteria for the new label.
While promoting sustainable development, Climalact faces challenges such as regulatory environmental limits, generational turnover, rural depopulation, and specialized labor shortages. These aspects will be key to developing tools for farmers to better adapt to PAC's new standards.
