On June 12, 2024, the Members' Council of Zuivelcoöperatie FrieslandCampina U.A. approved a comprehensive series of proposals aimed at enhancing the cooperative's attractiveness through improved member retention, recruitment, and financing strategies. In a significant move to bolster its governance, the council also ratified its sustainability strategy and appointed Wietse Duursma as both a member of the Cooperative’s Board and the Company’s Supervisory Board.
The approved package includes a variety of initiatives such as adjustments to farm takeover regulations, extension of the milk volume scheme, and introduction of a volume surcharge. Notably, the package also features a temporary waiver of the entry premium for new members and a strategy to enhance the liquidity of member dairy farmers by converting fixed member bonds into freely available member bonds by June 21, 2024. Furthermore, the cooperative announced plans to expand its operational area to encompass all of West and East Flanders in Belgium, where recruitment of new members will commence soon.
Nils den Besten, a board member of FrieslandCampina, expressed confidence that these measures will enhance the cooperative’s appeal and support members in liquidity, growth, and business acquisition, thus facilitating future investments for both members and the cooperative.
The council also endorsed a sustainability strategy focused on achieving a balance between offering nutritious products and ensuring environmental stewardship. The strategy emphasizes market-valued sustainability results, providing knowledge and tools to member farms, and promoting innovations and collaborations. Through its 'Foqus planet Sustainable development' programme, FrieslandCampina will continue to reward its members for their contributions to animal health, climate, and biodiversity.
In a notable governance enhancement, Wietse Duursma, a seasoned board member and dairy farmer from Bellingwolde, was appointed to the Cooperative’s Board and the Supervisory Board of Royal FrieslandCampina N.V., effective December 10, 2024. Sybren Attema, Chairman of both boards, praised Duursma’s deep understanding of the sector from both a local farming and international leadership perspective, underscoring the value he will bring to the organization.
This series of strategic decisions and appointments underscore FrieslandCampina's commitment to strengthening its cooperative model and enhancing its sustainability efforts, positioning it for continued success in the competitive dairy industry.
