This incentive was detailed in a recent press release from the dairy cooperative, which is wholly owned by the farmers.

The premium distribution included approximately 190 million euros disbursed through the ‘Foqus planet Sustainable development’ program and an additional 55 million euros awarded for participation in special milk flows, such as organic, On the way to PlanetProof, and VLOG. On average, this equates to a sustainability bonus of 2.63 euros per 100 kilograms of farm milk.

The 'Foqus planet' premiums, partly funded by the cooperative itself, also derive from customers who pay extra for sustainability initiatives and a cooperative contribution of 0.60 euros per 100 kilograms of milk, totaling over 56 million euros.

Cor Hoogeveen, an executive board member of Zuivelcoöperatie FrieslandCampina UA, explained, "2023 marked the launch of our revamped ‘Foqus planet Sustainable development’ payment system. It’s designed to clearly communicate the financial benefits of specific sustainability achievements to our members, encouraging them to adopt further environmentally friendly practices tailored to their individual farming operations."

Mireille Einwachter, Chief Sustainability Officer at Royal FrieslandCampina N.V., highlighted the growing customer demand for sustainable practices. "Our role is to assist our clients in achieving their climate objectives. The ‘Foqus planet Sustainable development’ system allows us to transparently showcase our sustainability metrics, supported by concrete data, aiding our partners like Mars, Mondelēz, Danone, Nestlé, and McDonald’s in meeting their sustainability targets."
