Fiji's iTaukei Lands Trust Board Supports Dairy Farming Through Leases

The iTaukei Lands Trust Board (TLTB) in Fiji currently oversees 73 active dairy leases, playing a crucial role in the country's rural economy and food security. As reported by iTaukei Affairs Minister Ifereimi Vasu, these leases are vital for farmers engaged in milk production.

Responding to an inquiry from Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu, Minister Vasu highlighted that from 2023 to 2025, the TLTB activated 16 dairy leases. This includes the renewal of nine existing leases for farmers whose previous contracts had expired, along with the introduction of seven new leases.

The new and renewed leases cover a combined land area exceeding 290 hectares. The annual rent rates have been mutually agreed upon between the TLTB and the representatives of the landowning units, ensuring fair compensation for land use.

Minister Vasu affirmed the government’s commitment to providing secure land tenure for dairy farmers. He noted that renewing these leases ensures long-term land use, sustained productivity, and stable rental incomes for the landowning communities. Such measures not only offer security but also bolster the national objective of food self-reliance.
