Edeka Expands Dairy Emissions Initiative with Four New Partners

German retailer Edeka has extended its environmental initiative to reduce emissions within its milk supply chain. The project now encompasses four new dairy producers: EMP Milchhof Prenzlau, NordseeMilch, Royal A-ware, and Molkerei Gropper. This collaboration is backed by research from Leuphana University Lüneburg and project management by consultancy firm Quantis.

The primary objective of this initiative is to target greenhouse gas emissions within conventional dairy production. Unlike niche or premium product lines, this effort seeks scalable practical solutions through direct collaboration with farmers. A standardised system for data collection and emissions calculation is being developed in alignment with the Science Based Targets initiative, aiming for consistency across producers.

Existing sustainability measures from each partner are being reviewed to merge their efforts based on environmental impact, cost, and feasibility. The initiative includes training programs, pilot projects, and targeted support for farmers as part of its implementation.

The project has a future expansion plan in 2027 to scale the effective emissions reduction measures across a broader supply chain. Each dairy producer brings a unique perspective: EMP Milchhof Prenzlau highlights large-scale farming in the east, NordseeMilch represents northern cooperative farms, Royal A-ware offers market-led emissions strategies, and Molkerei Gropper contributes its 'Klimahöfe' initiative.

Edeka aims to establish a science-led framework for emissions reduction, which could be adopted widely in the dairy sector, providing a uniform approach to measuring and minimizing emissions.
