Dairy Farm Manager's Fatal Accident Highlights Safety Oversight

A coronial investigation revealed that Karl Wayne Stokes, a 50-year-old dairy farm manager and consultant, tragically died after being struck by a cow while riding an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) without a helmet. The incident occurred on a dairy property in Lileah, north-west Tasmania, as detailed in the findings of Tasmanian Coroner Madeleine Wilson.

Stokes, known for his safety-conscious behavior, left his helmet at home due to fatigue and was in a rush to assist with farm duties. While trying to guide a stray cow back to the dairy yard, he was headbutted and fell to the ground, sustaining fatal head injuries. Despite immediate medical attention and being airlifted to Royal Hobart Hospital, Stokes died two days later.

The investigation by WorkSafe Tasmania confirmed that Stokes' helmet met safety standards, and colleagues affirmed his usual adherence to safety protocols. Coroner Wilson attributed the incident to an unusual lapse in judgment on Stokes' part, underscoring the unpredictable nature of working with livestock and the critical role of personal protective equipment (PPE) in preventing similar accidents.

This tragic event serves as a reminder to the agricultural sector of the potential dangers in routine farm activities and the necessity of maintaining strict PPE guidelines.
