Dairy Brands Use Cap Colours to Distinguish Milk Varieties

Milk brands use different colours on their packaging to separate several product varieties. The colour appears on the container cap and is used as a visual distinction between types of milk.

The packaging system covers whole milk, partially skimmed milk and varieties with reduced lactose. These categories are presented through different colours, allowing the products to be differentiated while they are displayed in shops.

For shoppers, the coloured caps provide a way to identify the intended variety during a supermarket purchase. The system is designed to make the choice between the listed types of milk easier at the point of sale.

The colours do not, however, follow one compulsory code across the market. There is no universal mandatory standard requiring every dairy brand to assign the same colour to a particular milk category.

As a result, the meaning of blue, red or green caps depends on the colour system used by the individual brand. A colour on one company’s packaging cannot be treated as a universal definition of the milk inside another company’s container.

The packaging colours therefore function as brand-level identifiers rather than as a single industry-wide rule. The products concerned remain whole milk, partially skimmed milk or reduced-lactose milk, while the visual coding may differ between manufacturers.
