Cooperatives and Value Addition Drive Growth for Argentine Dairy SMEs

The dairy industry in Argentina is undergoing a significant transformation, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Under the leadership of Pablo Villano, President of the Association of Small and Medium Dairy Enterprises (Apymel), these businesses have embraced cooperativism and value addition as vital strategies to navigate the current economic landscape.

Export Dynamics and Government Policies

Over the past twelve years, the number of SME exporters in the dairy sector has grown from just three to over 30, thanks in part to the government's efforts to reduce bureaucratic barriers. This has facilitated greater international market access for Argentine dairy products.

Focus on Value-Added Products

Rather than competing in the mass market for basic commodities, SMEs are focusing on specialized, value-added products. One notable innovation is the complete transformation of whey, a by-product traditionally discarded, now utilized in high-margin nutritional formulas and functional beverages.

Collaborative Models and Success Stories

Collaborative efforts such as the 'Sensaciones Queseras' consortium exemplify the successful cooperative model. Five SMEs have pooled resources and standardized quality protocols to jointly market diverse cheese specialties internationally, optimizing logistics and reducing costs without direct competition.

Operational Dynamics and Challenges

SMEs often benefit from direct owner involvement in operations, which compensates for their smaller scale compared to larger corporations. However, challenges persist, especially for microenterprises in non-central regions, where regulatory hurdles can push them towards informality.

Support and Development Initiatives

Apymel advocates for technical support and common protocols to help these regional businesses legally and safely supply urban and gourmet markets. Efforts to streamline tax and health regulations are also seen as critical to their sustainable growth.

Through these initiatives, Argentine dairy SMEs are not only surviving but are set to thrive, leveraging their unique strengths in a competitive global market.
