CCGL Raises Milk Solids’ Share of Payments to 40%

The updated formula means that the same volume of milk can receive different payments according to the fat and protein levels recorded in testing. Volume remains part of the calculation, while the composition of the raw material now has a larger weighting in the final amount paid.

Fat and protein levels vary between farms and can also change over time. The source identifies herd nutrition, feed quality, daily management, animal health and general production conditions as factors that affect the results recorded in milk analyses.

Under the revised weighting, producers whose milk already has stronger quality indicators receive greater recognition for those results within the payment system. The change also places more emphasis on monitoring production indicators and on adjustments to feeding and herd-management practices.

The objective, he said, was for producers to improve their indicators and benefit increasingly from the system that pays for milk according to solids.
