Armenian Lawmaker Proposes Dairy Import Ban from Russia Amidst Trade Tensions

In response to recent trade restrictions imposed by Russia, a pro-government lawmaker in Armenia has suggested banning the import of dairy products from Russia.
Sisak Gabrielian, a member of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian’s Civil Contract party, voiced his proposal during a session at the National Assembly, expressing concern over the imbalance in trade relations between the two countries.
Gabrielian highlighted the discrepancy where Armenia continues to import Russian goods while facing limitations on its own exports to Russia. He emphasized the need for reciprocal measures, particularly in light of Russia's recent ban on Armenian dairy products, citing concerns over safety standards.
Russia's agricultural inspection body, Rosselkhoznadzor, initiated the ban on Armenian dairy exports citing inadequate safety assurances from the Veterinary Service of Armenia. This move follows earlier restrictions imposed on Armenian fish-breeding products and bottled mineral water, further straining bilateral trade relations.
The ongoing trade disputes between Armenia and Russia underscore a broader geopolitical shift, with Armenia increasingly aligning with Western allies, much to Russia's chagrin.
