Arla Foods Ingredients said on Friday it welcomed a regulatory decision confirming that milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) is not classified as a novel food, paving the way for clearer labelling across the European Union.

The ruling, issued by the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, means MFGM can now be explicitly declared on food products for both infants and adults throughout the bloc.
MFGM, a component found naturally in breast milk, is known for its role in early life nutrition. Arla Foods Ingredients was the first company to introduce MFGM to the global infant formula market and is now seeking to expand awareness of its benefits in broader functional food categories.
The company’s MFGM ingredients contain whey protein, phospholipids, omega-3 fatty acids, and other nutrients. They also provide key micronutrients such as vitamin B12 and choline, which support cognitive and metabolic health. Vitamin B12 deficiency remains one of the most widespread micronutrient gaps worldwide.
In a bid to increase industry engagement, Arla has launched "Whey360," a campaign aimed at showcasing MFGM’s potential beyond infant formula. The initiative highlights new functional product concepts, including a squeezable cheese, a UHT drink for children, and a high-protein drinking yogurt. It also includes recipes targeting toddler nutrition.
The campaign underlines opportunities for on-pack claims, including “high in protein,” “contains Omega-3,” “high in B12,” and “contains milk phospholipids.”
“We’re pleased to offer our customers clear documentation showing MFGM’s suitability for both food and infant nutrition applications,” said Henrik Jacob Hjortshøj, head of sales development for functional nutrition at Arla Foods Ingredients. “While this decision applies to the EU, we believe it could have ripple effects in other markets and help raise consumer awareness of MFGM’s benefits globally.”
