In response to the recent instances of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) affecting dairy cows in the South Central United States, West Virginia Commissioner of Agriculture Kent Leonhardt is issuing a stern call to action for farmers to bolster biosecurity measures on their farms, particularly in regard to wild bird interactions near cattle.
With confirmed cases of HPAI emerging in dairy cows in several states, Leonhardt stresses the importance of heightened vigilance among West Virginia dairy farmers. They are strongly advised to exercise caution when moving dairy cows from affected dairies in states grappling with ongoing cases.
While West Virginia has not reported any positive cases thus far, the Agriculture Department urges dairy farmers in the state to remain proactive in safeguarding their livestock and operations against the potential spread of the avian influenza virus.
