U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack announced that changes to the WIC program, aimed at expanding the range of dairy products, including yogurt, will result in a $40 million increase in sales for the dairy industry. This report was made by a DairyNews.today correspondent from the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin.
“WIC Program Will Increase Dairy Sales by $40 Million,” says U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack
The change comes amid proposals to include plant-based beverages in the program. However, Vilsack emphasized that the goal of expanding the dairy product offerings is not only to maintain but also to increase the consumption of milk and dairy products.

The Secretary noted that the WIC program should meet the needs of its participants by offering flexibility in dairy product choices, which could boost participation and subsequently increase sales.

“Despite the inclusion of plant-based alternatives, we anticipate that the program’s expansion will have a positive impact on the dairy industry,” he stated.

Vilsack added that the policy change aims to increase program coverage from the current 50% to 60-80% of potential participants, which could also lead to sales growth.

WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) is a program designed to support women, infants, and children at risk by providing them with nutritious foods, including dairy products, to maintain health and proper development. WIC offers access to nutrient-rich foods essential for vulnerable populations.
