Valio's Haapavesi factory, renowned for producing Valio Oltermanni® cheeses, is set to enhance its sustainability efforts by transitioning to electric boiler solutions for energy production. In collaboration with energy company Adven, the modern 12 MW electric steam boiler will replace biomass and peat-based production, aligning with Valio's goal to achieve net-zero carbon footprint for milk by 2035.

Key Highlights:
Green Energy Transition: The shift to electric boilers is in line with Valio's commitment to improving energy efficiency, phasing out fossil fuels, and utilizing renewable energy sources, supporting their aim to reset milk's carbon footprint to net zero.
Energy Efficiency and Flexibility: Adven's solution provides a modern and efficient alternative, ensuring precise optimization for energy availability in various situations. The electric boiler will work alongside the existing backup energy plant, allowing flexibility in energy production based on electricity availability and pricing fluctuations.
Technical Implementation: Adven's proposal includes a 12 MW electric steam boiler with connections, marking the company's second electric boiler implementation for Valio. The project aims to electrify process steam production by March 2026, reducing carbon emissions.
Energy-as-a-Service Model: Adven, a long-term partner of Valio, will not only design the new electric boiler plant and network but also manage the project, provide financing, and take charge of plant operation and energy production under the energy-as-a-service model.
EU Funding: The project has received funding from the European Union's NextGeneration EU initiative, contributing to sustainable and innovative energy solutions.
This collaboration emphasizes the commitment of both Valio and Adven to address environmental challenges, promote energy efficiency, and drive the adoption of clean energy alternatives in industrial processes.
