USDA Reports Avian Influenza Cases in 213 Dairy Herds Across 14 US States
Since April 2024, 14 human cases of avian influenza A(H5) virus infection have been confirmed in the US. Four of these cases were linked to exposure to infected dairy cows, while nine were associated with contact with avian influenza-infected poultry. One recent case in Missouri, reported on September 6, remains under investigation regarding the source of exposure.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) maintains that the risk to the general public remains low based on current data. However, CDC advises people to avoid contact with sick or dead animals, particularly poultry and other domesticated or wild birds. Those working with potentially infected animals are urged to take proper precautions.
Since April 2023, bird flu has affected 36 commercial and 22 backyard flocks, totaling 18.68 million birds, according to the USDA. A coordinated effort between the USDA, CDC, and other agencies continues to address the spread of the virus using a ‘One Health’ approach.
