Dutch company Upfield, one of the world's leading plant-based foods, has announced the launch of the world's first plastic-free, recyclable packaging for dairy-free plant-based butter and spreads.
Upfield launches world's first paper tray for spreads and butter substitutes

Following four years of innovation in collaboration with Footprint, MCC and Pages Group, this rollout marks the beginning of Upfield's transition to paper solutions for all products, in line with the company's goals to reduce plastic content in packaging by 80% by 2030.

Upfield expects to further scale its paper solution to replace up to two billion plastic tubs by 2030, while preventing the generation of more than 25,000 tonnes of plastic waste per year.

The innovative paper trays have been developed by Upfield's leading research and development team using Footprint materials science technology. They are made from compressed wet paper fibers and are waterproof, oilproof and recyclable in local paper waste streams. The tub is certified free of traditional plastic and uses paper from a PEFC certified supplier. Upfield expects packaging to be certified for home compost by 2025.

Unlike many paper packaging solutions, Upfield paper tubs do not have a plastic liner, so they can be recycled with other household paper and cardboard waste, as certified by Europe's leading recycling company.
