Study Suggests Yogurt May Protect Against Colon Cancer

New Findings on Yogurt and Colon Cancer Risk
A recent study conducted by scientists at Mass General Brigham, a healthcare institution based in Boston, USA, indicates that regular and prolonged consumption of yogurt may lower the risk of developing colon cancer. The research was published on Wednesday in the journal Gut Microbes.
Role of Bifidobacterium
The potential protective benefit of yogurt appears to be linked to the presence of Bifidobacterium, a common bacterium found in yogurt known for its positive effects on intestinal health. This bacterium may help reduce the risk of proximal colorectal cancer when yogurt is consumed at least twice a week.
Implications and Future Research
According to the study's co-author Shuji Ogino, who heads the Molecular Pathological Epidemiology Program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the study offers unique evidence of yogurt's possible benefits. The scientific community will continue to explore this relationship to better understand its impact on public health.
