Melbourne-based Pure Dairy has announced a strategic partnership with Great Lakes Cheese, the leading U.S. natural and processed cheese packager, marking a significant milestone in Pure Dairy's global expansion efforts.
Over the past decade, Pure Dairy has transformed from a local Australian business into a major player in the global dairy industry, operating in 72 countries and establishing four international offices. The new partnership with Great Lakes Cheese will provide the momentum for further growth, particularly with the upcoming launch of Pure Dairy’s new production facility in Victoria, scheduled to open in 2025.
The investment from Great Lakes Cheese will enable Pure Dairy to enhance its asset base and solidify Australia’s position as a key dairy producer. “The investment from Great Lakes Cheese accelerates our plans to acquire further assets and consolidate Australia’s position as one of the world’s top dairy producers,” said Adrian Josephson, executive chairman of Pure Dairy.
Great Lakes Cheese, which is making its first international investment with this partnership, was drawn to Pure Dairy’s extensive global reach and strong market relationships. “Their strong relationships and deep understanding of individual markets assured us that Pure Dairy is the right partner for us as we now make our very first investment outside of America,” commented Mark Anderson, vice president and CFO of Great Lakes Cheese.
The new Victorian production facility will bolster Pure Dairy’s capabilities, integrating an R&D kitchen, manufacturing, warehousing, logistics, and corporate offices. The plant will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology, ensuring lean manufacturing practices and adherence to the highest environmental sustainability standards. The facility will not only serve Pure Dairy’s production needs but will also offer collaborative and white-label manufacturing opportunities to industry partners.
Josephson emphasized the broader benefits of the new facility, stating, “The new facility will be a great asset to everyone in Australian dairy, and we will continue to provide our customers with data-driven, unbiased advice.”
The partnership with Great Lakes Cheese creates new synergies that will benefit both companies. Leveraging Great Lakes Cheese’s strong distribution network in the U.S., Pure Dairy will have increased access to American retailers and food service businesses, further expanding the presence of Australian dairy products in the U.S. market.
“Today’s dairy industry is about constantly looking for new opportunities and forming strategic relationships. For this, there’s no stronger partner than Pure Dairy,” said Josephson.
Established in 2011, Pure Dairy has evolved from a dairy commodity trader into a comprehensive provider of consulting and trade services across international markets, food services, and retail sectors. With its multidisciplinary teams and a presence in 72 countries, Pure Dairy maintains strong connections with stakeholders throughout the dairy supply chain, from farmers to consumers.
Great Lakes Cheese, an award-winning natural and processed cheese manufacturer, has a national footprint in the U.S., with facilities across Ohio, New York, Tennessee, Utah, Wisconsin, and Texas. Celebrating its 65th anniversary in 2023, the family and employee-owned company specializes in natural and processed cheese products, including shreds, slices, and snacks.
