IDF and EDA jointly hosted an official event at COP28, focusing on "How animal source foods nourish the world in times of climate change." The event, held on December 5 , aimed to provide a comprehensive approach encompassing nutrition, economic and social sustainability, and climate action within agrifood systems.

The panel featured experts from various continents, including Ambassador Carlos Cherniak, Chair of the Subcommittee of Livestock at FAO; Dr. Lynnette Neufeld, Director of the Food and Nutrition Division of FAO; Dr. Namukolo Covic, ILRI Director General’s Representative to Ethiopia; Mr. Lloyd Day, Deputy Director General at IICA; Ms. Smriti Singh, Manager of NDDB Foundation; Ms. Jeanette Coombs, Sustainability Advocacy Director at Danone; Ms. Evangelista Chekera, Youth Farm Leader from WFO, and IDF Director General, Ms. Caroline Emond.
Ambassador Cherniak emphasized the need to address trade-offs between animal farming and sustainability, highlighting the efforts of responsible producers worldwide in adapting to climate change. FAO's Dr. Neufeld underlined the positive health outcomes of milk and dairy products across all life stages, emphasizing the essential nutrients they provide.
Ms. Covic highlighted the crucial role of livestock in building livelihoods in many African regions, emphasizing proactive engagement with sustainable food systems transformation efforts. Mr. Lloyd Day focused on the role of Terrestrial Animal Source Foods (TASF) in School Meals programs, stating that animal source foods play an irreplaceable role in ensuring children's nutrition and growth.
Ms. Smriti Singh discussed the relevance of dairy, particularly school milk programs, in feeding a billion people and supporting livelihoods in India. School milk programs not only ensure markets for milk but also contribute to positive outcomes such as a 7% decrease in stunted children, a 24% increase in IQ results, and a 10% increase in school attendance.
