FrieslandCampina has signed a partnership with Earthworm Foundation to improve transparency in the palm oil supply chain and monitor deforestation through the Starling solution, a satellite geospatial monitoring tool co-developed with Airbus Defence and Space.
FrieslandCampina partners with Earthworm and Starling for sustainable palm oil sourcing
Earthworm Foundation is a global non-profit organisation with over 25 years of experience in the responsible sourcing of various raw materials. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in our sustainability journey, reinforcing our commitment to responsible palm oil sourcing and our dedication to creating positive impacts on the planet and the communities we serve.

Addressing the risks of deforestation
The production of commodities such as palm oil, cocoa, soy, and pulp and paper is responsible for over 70 percent of tropical deforestation. To combat this, it is important that we have detailed knowledge of our supply chains to address deforestation development risks effectively. FrieslandCampina is committed to ensure its sourcing, production and financial investment does not cause or contribute towards gross conversion of natural ecosystems by 2030.

Through our partnership with Earthworm Foundation, we are enhancing the traceability of our palm oil supplies via the Starling solution. Starling, which was jointly developed by Earthworm Foundation and Airbus DS, supports FrieslandCampina’s no-deforestation commitments in the sourcing of palm oil. This innovative tool enables us to assess our leading suppliers in Southeast Asia and provides detailed insights into the supply chain from plantation mills, ensuring traceability to the plantation (TTP).

Our shared commitments
Together, we are embarking on a journey to promote responsible purchase of palm oil. Through this partnership, we are committing to:

Traceability: We aim to go beyond mills to achieve traceability to plantation. This level of clarity allows us to better understand and address the environmental and social issues within our supply chain.

Grievance Mechanism: Earthworm Foundation's experienced staff will assist us in building a robust grievance mechanism, keeping us updated with any arising cases and ensuring we handle them effectively.

Deforestation and Conversion Monitoring: Utilising Airbus’ high-resolution satellite imagery, Starling helps us monitor deforestation and conversion activities, even beneath cloud cover, allowing us to identify and mitigate any contributions to deforestation.

Driving meaningful change
Our partnership with Earthworm Foundation and Starling is a testament to our dedication to driving meaningful change in the palm oil industry. By joining forces, we aim to strengthen our supply chain transparency, creating a more traceable and sustainable supply chain that helps identify and address environmental and social risks.

This is a significant progress to work on responsible sourcing including more visibility in traceability, deforestation monitoring, and preventing and remediating violations in upstream supply chain.
