For the second consecutive year, Belgian dairy firms have recorded a 3% increase in milk deliveries from breeders, both local and international, reaching an impressive total of 4.5 billion liters last year. Domestic milk deliveries saw a modest rise of 2%.
To uphold their production levels, these companies have significantly tapped into foreign milk sources, with volumes from such sources more than doubling since 2022 to reach 138 million liters, as reported by the statistics office.
However, the main production category, consumer milk, has been experiencing a downward trend since 2020, with a 2.1% decrease from 2022 to 2023, totaling 801 million liters. Within this segment, the demand for vitamin-enriched milk has sharply declined by 45% over the past five years, now making up only 17.6 million liters.
In contrast, there has been a notable increase in the production of dairy-based desserts, cream, and yogurt, with production up by 15%, 10%, and 8% respectively over the last five years. This suggests a strategic pivot within the industry to cater to changing consumer tastes and preferences.
