The PDFA has implemented significant initiatives to support local farmers. One notable project involved the distribution of 50 high-quality Murrah and Nili-Ravi buffaloes to farmers. These buffalo breeds are known for their exceptional milk production, which is expected to substantially increase the dairy yield of the recipient families.

Financial Commitment

This initiative required an investment of approximately Rs 51 lakh, underscoring the PDFA's dedication to improving the livelihoods of farmers who have faced recent challenges. The association plans to allocate the remaining funds towards further rehabilitation efforts to assist the affected communities.

Industry Impact

The PDFA reports that around 60 to 70 percent of Punjab's maize acreage is now used for silage production. This development provides a significant income source for rural farmers and contributes to the growth and development of the region's agricultural and dairy sectors.

Opposition to Punjab’s Bovine Breeding Rules

The Progressive Dairy Farmers Association has voiced opposition to the proposed Punjab’s Bovine Breeding Rules, 2021. Concerns include shortages of artificial-insemination workers, increased breeding costs, and additional administrative burdens. The PDFA indicates that these rules could impact more than 30,000 dairy farmers and approximately 12,000 organized PDFA farms throughout the state.
