European Dairy Association (EDA)
The European Dairy Association (EDA) is strategically headquartered in Brussels, Belgium, a location that facilitates effective communication and engagement with European institutions and international stakeholders. This strategic positioning supports the EDA's advocacy efforts significantly.
Financial Indicators
While the EDA does not publicly disclose its financials, it represents a sector that contributes approximately €100 billion annually to the EU economy, underlining its substantial impact.
Important Events
The EDA has been instrumental in the EU-Mercosur trade agreement, which enhances market access for EU dairy products in South American countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. This agreement prioritizes the interests of the European dairy industry.
In a demonstration of international cooperation, the EDA celebrated Europe Day on 9 May 2024 in Kyiv, Ukraine, by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ukrainian lactosphere.
The association has also shown support for the new EU-U.S. Framework Agreement, aiming to provide greater stability in transatlantic trade. To further these efforts, an EDA delegation plans to visit Washington by the end of September to engage with U.S. industry stakeholders.
Company Plans
Looking forward, the EDA aims to leverage the EU-Mercosur trade agreement to boost European dairy exports. Future initiatives will focus on policy advocacy, promoting sustainable practices, and ensuring a competitive edge for European dairy products globally. The EDA is committed to enhancing collaboration within the industry to address environmental sustainability and improve global market access.
Alexander Anton, the secretary general of the EDA, plays a critical role in directing the organization's strategic focus, especially in addressing international market challenges, such as the anticipated extension of the anti-subsidy investigation by China.
Additionally, the EDA has highlighted issues surrounding sugar labeling challenges in the GCC, where 'total sugar' labeling includes both naturally occurring lactose and added sugars, leading to unfair taxation of nutritionally valuable products.
The association is also involved in outlining ambitions for the Irish and European dairy processing sectors, collaborating with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, and DII to release a joint document during the presidency.
