Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin was born on October 7, 1952, in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg), Russia. A former KGB intelligence officer, Putin rose to prominence in Russian politics in the late 1990s. First appointed Prime Minister in 1999 under President Boris Yeltsin, Putin briefly became Acting President following Yeltsin's resignation at the end of that year. Winning the subsequent 2000 presidential election, he served his initial two terms until 2008 when he became Prime Minister again due to constitutional term limits. In 2012, he returned to the presidency and has held the office since then, marking a significant and enduring influence on both Russian and global politics.
