Important Events
One of the critical stances that has marked Macron's presidency is his opposition to the EU-Mercosur trade agreement. This agreement, involving the European Union and the South American trade bloc Mercosur (comprising Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay), aims to promote trade by reducing tariffs. However, Macron has raised concerns regarding environmental standards and the impact of the agreement on French farmers. His opposition is rooted in his commitment to environmental sustainability and protecting local industries.
In 2019, Macron questioned the Brazilian government's commitment to environmental protection under President Jair Bolsonaro, especially following the Amazon rainforest fires, leading to heightened tensions regarding the trade deal. Macron's stance reflects France's broader policy approach of prioritizing binding commitments to global environmental standards in international trade agreements.
