Karnataka Co-operative Milk Producers’ Federation Limited (KMF)
Karnataka Co-operative Milk Producers’ Federation Limited, commonly known as KMF, stands as India’s second-largest dairy cooperative federation. With a vast network that incorporates 16 district milk unions, KMF processes millions of litres of milk daily. This cooperative enterprise plays a crucial role in the regional dairy market by supporting nearly 2.6 million smallholder dairy farmers across Karnataka.
Operations and Product Range
Under the brand name Nandini, KMF markets an extensive range of more than 65 dairy products. These include staples such as milk powder, ghee, and butter. The cooperative’s product line is not only a staple in households but also serves institutional needs, notably contributing milk powder to Karnataka’s Ksheera Bhagya school-nutrition programme. This initiative is essential in providing nutritious milk to millions of schoolchildren, thereby supporting child health and education across the state.
Economic Model and Farmer Support
The economic model of KMF is structured to benefit the participating farmers directly. Revenue generated from processed dairy products is redistributed to these producers. Payments to farmers are calculated based on the milk's fat and solids-not-fat content, ensuring fair compensation for quality produce. Additionally, state-backed incentives further enhance the livelihood of the dairy farmers, making KMF a pivotal player in the socioeconomic development of the region.
