India: Women Take Center Stage in Milk Producer Organisations

NDDB Dairy Services has actively promoted women’s empowerment in the dairy value chain
NDDB Dairy Services (NDS), a not-for-profit subsidiary of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), is championing women's leadership in the dairy sector. Historically involved in managing cattle and milking, women are now becoming business leaders through NDS's initiatives, overseeing Milk Producer Organisations (MPOs).
Out of 22 operational MPOs facilitated by NDS, 17 are owned by women, with female-led boards. Notably, 18 of these organisations are chaired by women, signaling robust governance led by women. Dr Meenesh Shah, Chairman of NDDB & NDS, stated, 'NDS-facilitated MPOs exemplify how women-led enterprises can redefine success in the dairy sector.'
Moreover, over 1,22,000 ‘Lakhpati Didis’ have emerged through these organisations, creating a significant socio-economic impact. Dr Shah emphasizes the need for expanding women's roles beyond governance, highlighting the recent appointment of Smt. Rachana Deodhar Goel as Chief Executive of Sakhi Mahila Milk Producer Organization in Rajasthan, marking a pioneering move in executive leadership.
