Whey Protein Shortage Alters Trade Relations in Dairy Industry
The dairy industry is currently experiencing a significant shift due to a shortage of whey protein. This shortage has led to changes in commercial relationships, as companies that previously sourced whey protein with ease now find themselves navigating an environment where availability and established commercial ties are as crucial as price.
Manufacturers have reported that buyers need to have established connections to secure access to whey protein, particularly as demand is expected to rise in the second half of the year. This situation has highlighted a contradiction within the industry: the growing popularity of protein-rich foods has driven one of the sector's most dynamic categories, yet this very success is beginning to create operational challenges.
Some companies have already faced supply disruptions, necessitating the import of more expensive raw materials and leading them to reformulate products to reduce reliance on whey protein. For instance, the Canadian company HelloAmino had to seek new suppliers after losing access to the ingredient used in their baking mixes. In the UK, Majic Protein acquired all available whey concentrate from a wholesaler to keep their operations running for several more months. Meanwhile, the US-based Vitalura Labs temporarily removed a product, accounting for about half of its sales, from its portfolio due to successive cost increases.
In response to these challenges, some companies are considering alternatives such as milk protein concentrate and plant-based proteins. However, replacing whey protein is not straightforward, as differences in functionality and sensory characteristics can affect the performance of the final products.
While consumers have not yet fully felt the effects of the shortage, the pressure on costs is mounting within the industry. As a result, whey protein is evolving from being merely a valued ingredient to a strategic component within the dairy supply chain, influencing supply decisions, product development, and commercial relationships throughout the food industry.
