The Transformation of Hatsun Agro Products into a Dairy Giant
RG Chandramogan, born in rural Tamil Nadu, began his career with a modest start after failing his pre-university mathematics exam and working for Rs 65 per month at a timber depot. In 1970, with Rs 13,000 from his father's liquidation of family land, he rented a small facility in Chennai to start manufacturing ice creams under the 'Arun' brand. Initially, Chandramogan personally pushed vending carts to ensure cash flow.
Realizing the limitations of seasonal ice cream sales, Chandramogan pivoted to the liquid milk market in the 1980s. He expanded into milk processing and value-added products like butter and ghee, establishing direct procurement networks with regional milk producers. This strategic shift transformed Hatsun Agro Products into a publicly traded company with a market capitalization of over Rs 20,000 crore.
As of 2026, Chandramogan's net worth stands at $1.6 billion, placing him at number 99 on India's Richest List in 2023 and 2481 on the global billionaires index. The Indian Dairy Association recognized his contributions with the Patronage Award in 2018.
Hatsun's growth exemplifies the importance of long-term planning and foundational execution, focusing on supply chain logistics and quality control. The company's strategy has been to consolidate the unorganized dairy sector into a structured corporate entity, maintaining rigorous quality standards from milk collection to retail distribution.
Over the decades, Hatsun Agro Products has demonstrated that success in the dairy industry relies on robust supply chains and strong relationships with farmers, emphasizing sustainable practices and quality assurance.
