The Russian Government Updates Dietary Standards for Detainees to Include Cottage Cheese

The changes have been introduced through a government decree, which TASS was made aware of. The document will come into effect in March 2027. Until then, authorities are expected to update related regulations regarding food supply.

The established amounts of bread, potatoes, salt, and products containing margarine have been slightly reduced for those in custody. Convicted individuals will now receive butter. The weekly provisions for the accused include 100 grams of cottage cheese, two chicken eggs, and one fresh apple or fruit juice.

The vegetable allocation for both categories has been increased from 250 grams to 320–340 grams. The document specifies a new seasonal allocation of products, with separate lists provided for summer and winter. These lists include cabbage, beets, carrots, onions, cucumbers, tomatoes, pumpkin, and squash.

The daily meat allowance for convicted individuals has been raised from 90 grams to 100 grams. After the change, this will match the standard for the accused. Additional nutrition for those working in hazardous conditions is maintained.

According to materials attached to the decree, the revised diets of suspects, the accused, and convicted individuals will align with the nutritional and energy value guidelines recommended by Rospotrebnadzor. The document also specifies the types of products to be purchased for institutions to ensure a unified approach to their food supply.

Justice Minister Konstantin Chuychenko announced preparations for these changes in April. He mentioned plans to increase vegetable portions and introduce butter, eggs, cottage cheese, and fresh fruits into the diet. The minister also noted the potential use of iodized salt, particularly in northern regions and areas with iodine deficiency. The decree has deferred the implementation of the new standards by 180 days.
