Potential of Eland Milk Production in Semi-Arid Regions Explored
Researchers have turned their attention to the eland, a large antelope native to Africa, to explore its potential as a milk producer. The animal's ability to thrive in harsh environments with minimal water has caught the interest of scientists considering alternatives to traditional livestock in semi-arid regions.
Domesticated female elands have been recorded producing approximately seven kilograms of milk per day. Notably, the fat content of this milk ranges between 11% and 17%, significantly higher than that of conventional cow milk. This characteristic, combined with the milk's ability to remain fresh for extended periods without rapid deterioration, highlights its potential as a valuable resource.
Several research centers outside Africa have begun studying the eland's integration into controlled farming systems to assess whether its traits offer a viable alternative to traditional cattle in areas where they may be less efficient. The studies focus on three main factors: high protein production, low water requirements, and adaptability to extreme climates.
Despite these promising attributes, the eland has not yet become a mainstream livestock choice for large-scale production. However, its journey from the wild to controlled farming environments serves as a testament to the possibilities that arise from studying wildlife for agricultural innovation.
While the eland has not fully transitioned into a staple production animal, its example provides insight into potential agricultural advancements for regions facing climatic challenges.
