Dairy farmers in Northern Ireland are continuing to invest in the long-term future of their businesses, focusing on genetic breeding despite a recent downturn in global milk markets. Ivan Minford, product manager at Ai Services, highlighted this commitment during the Armagh Show 2026. He noted that dairy farming inherently requires a long-term outlook, stating, "Milk markets will, no doubt, improve again at some stage in the future. And when this happens farmers must be ready to fully capitalize on these opportunities."

Minford emphasized the importance of infrastructure improvement and breeding as key investments. He explained, "If breeding is about one thing, it is about the future." Advances in genetic information now allow for more precise breeding decisions aimed at future benefits.

Genetic Advancements in Dairy Farming

Genetics remains a core component of successful dairy farming, with significant advances in breeding strategies over the past decades. Forty years ago, breeding focused primarily on increasing milk yield. At that time, Northern Ireland herds typically followed a summer grazing and winter silage system, yielding 5,000-6,000 liters annually. Today, yields have nearly doubled, and farmers are increasingly satisfied with their production levels.

Modern genetic selection encompasses more than just yield. Breeding efforts now target traits such as butterfat and protein percentage, fertility, durability, health, and feed-to-milk conversion efficiency. Minford also pointed out the role genetics plays in disease resistance and environmental sustainability. Recent research indicates that genetics help regulate methane output, urinary nitrogen levels, and phosphorus excretion rates.

The launch of Ai Services' 'Summer 2026' Dairy Catalogue illustrates these advancements. The catalogue features new Holstein sires, including Peak Sixty ET and the daughter-proven POWERBUCK, both demonstrating strong performance on local farms.

The Future of Genetic Selection

Minford concluded by underlining the potential of genomics in identifying desirable traits early in bulls, thus improving selection accuracy. He stated, "Genomics can now enable the identification of all these traits in young bulls from a very early age - the sires are there, and the choice is there." This approach ensures that Northern Ireland's dairy farmers are well-placed to benefit from future market recoveries and ongoing advancements in genetic breeding.
