New Milk shortage map from DIA
In 2019, the shortage of milk in terms of final consumption in Russia amounted to 3.6 million tons, 4% lower than in 2018 and 51.8% lower than in 2013.
Milk consumption per capita in Russia decreased from 2013 to 2016, then a small increase began, in 2019 the consumption level was 158.5 kg per capita, 3.3% higher than in 2018. The first place among the regions in terms of milk consumption per capita in 2019 was occupied by Kirov region (324 kg), the second place by Kaluga region (306 kg), and the third place by the Republic of Tatarstan (279 kg).
The most deficient region in terms of milk supply is Moscow region with the city of Moscow, in 2019 the deficit was 3.1 million tons, 0.4% lower than in 2018 and 13.7% lower than in 2013.
Altai region remains the surplus region in terms of final consumption (498.7 thousand tons), the surplus of milk in 2019 is 4.7% more than in 2018 and twice as much as in 2013.
In 2020, there was a unique situation, the closure of borders due to the pandemic led to an increase in spending within the country, especially in the summer. According to DIA analysts, milk consumption in 2020 will be about 172.2 kg per capita, 13.7 kg more than in 2019. Thus, the volume of the milk market in 2020 will grow by 8.6% compared to the level of 2019 to 25.3 million tons. Whether there will be such an effect in 2021 depends on how the situation will develop in the fight against the pandemic and how the economy will develop.
