Mexico Ranks Second in Latin American Milk Production with Precision Farming

At the FONA Holstein 2026 forum held in Querétaro, Mexico was reaffirmed as the second-largest bovine milk producer in Latin America and eighth globally, according to the Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER). The forum, organized by Holstein Mexico, served as a platform for technological innovation and strengthening the competitiveness of the national dairy industry.

The sector produces 13 billion liters of milk annually, with a self-sufficiency rate close to 77%, supplying almost 80% of the country's consumption. Experts at the forum emphasized the transformational impact of digitalization and intelligent monitoring from early stages of cattle development on the sector's productivity.

MSD Animal Health introduced the SenseHub® Youngstock monitoring solution at the event, designed for individualized tracking of calves and young animals. This technology collects real-time data on behavior, activity levels, and health status to preempt health issues.

Representatives from MSD, including Abraham Cohen and Luis Gerardo González, highlighted that real-time data access revolutionizes decision-making in livestock management. By combining precision sensors with scientific knowledge and veterinary practices, the industry can shift from reactive to preventive production models focused on animal welfare and optimizing rearing parameters.

Early adoption of tracking technologies is crucial for ensuring the sustainability and profitability of Mexican dairy herds in the long term. By refining management protocols from the initial stages of rearing, the national industry bolsters its productive capacity, maintaining leadership in the region and meeting the increasing demand for safe food.
