Ireland recalls dairy products over Listeria concerns

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland announced the recall on August 27, 2026, after concerns about the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes in specified Macroom Buffalo Cheese products. The products are distributed through supermarkets across Ireland, where recall notices are to be displayed at points of sale.

The affected items are Macroom Buffalo Cheese Mozzarella in a 125g pack, Macroom Buffalo Cheese Bocconcini in a 160g pack, and Macroom Buffalo Cheese Burrata in a 150g pack. Each recalled product carries a use-by date of September 7, 2026.

The authority instructed people who bought the listed products to stop consuming them. Consumers can take the items back to the retailer for a full refund, and a receipt is not required.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause listeriosis, an infection generally contracted through contaminated food. Reported symptoms may include mild flu-like illness, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.

The infection presents a particular risk to pregnant women, babies and people with weakened immune systems, including older people. In immunocompromised and elderly patients, it can occasionally spread to the central nervous system, resulting in meningitis or septicaemia. Possible symptoms in such cases include headache, a stiff neck, confusion, impaired balance and convulsions.

The average incubation period is about three weeks, although symptoms may begin between three and 70 days after infection. Anyone who feels unwell after eating one of the recalled products has been advised to seek medical attention, particularly if they belong to a high-risk group.
